HIPAA violations come with penalties and consequences. Data breach could be another form of HIPAA violations, but there are some cases that they are not. A data breach could only be considered as a HIPAA violation if directly violates the HIPAA policies of the healthcare facility or organization, or if it is the result of a HIPAA compliance program that is outdated and ineffective.
Other violations include the ransomware and malware attacks, hacking, stolen phone, USB device, or laptop, social media posts, and many others. All of these violations can actually be prevented if an efficient HIPAA compliance is in place. Everyone involved in the operations, including office staff and healthcare professionals should also be aware of HIPAA compliance programs in order to avoid violating the policies.
